Founder of biogeochemistry who reconceived the Earth through the biosphere and noosphere

Starting as a mineralogist, he founded the new science of biogeochemistry and formulated the concepts of the biosphere and noosphere, making him a forerunner of modern Earth system science. He served as the first president of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (1918) and organized the Soviet Radium Institute, laying the institutional groundwork for early Soviet uranium and atomic research. Once a Kadet Central Committee member and deputy education minister in the Provisional Government, he stayed in the USSR under the Academy's protection and won the Stalin Prize in 1943.

The Biosphere and Noosphere: A Grand Synthesis That Reread the Earth

In his 1926 book The Biosphere, Vernadsky reformulated life on Earth not as a mere collection of species but as a planetary-scale geological force. He classified the matter of the biosphere into seven types: living matter, biogenic matter (derived from life), inert matter (formed without life), bio-inert matter (born at the boundary of the living and the non-living: soil being the prime example), and three further categories. In his framework, the total mass of living organisms ('living matter') acts as a geological agent that absorbs solar energy and drives the cycling of chemical elements; even the accumulation of atmospheric oxygen was, in his view, a cumulative product of life's activity.

From this foundation, Vernadsky argued that the biosphere inevitably evolves into the 'noosphere': the sphere of reason. The noosphere is a new geological stage in which humanity's scientific thought becomes a planetary force. He identified its preconditions: the settlement of Homo sapiens across the entire planet, the emergence of a unified global information system, the harnessing of new energy sources such as atomic power, the triumph of democratic governance, and the ever-widening participation of people in scientific work. This vision represented the pinnacle of the Russian cosmism tradition, which sought to unify natural science and social progress within a single evolutionary framework. In Scientific Thought as a Planetary Phenomenon (written in 1938 and published posthumously), Vernadsky treated the irreversible accumulation of scientific knowledge as the sole proof of progress. His optimism, grounded in the geochemical evidence of life's transformative power, remains a vital reference point in contemporary Earth system science and Anthropocene debates.
