Alexander Dmitrievich Protopopov

Александр Дмитриевич Протопопов

The last interior minister of the Russian Empire: elevated by Rasputin, destroyed by his own unraveling

On 26 February 1917, as Petrograd erupted, a Synod official asked Protopopov whether the unrest threatened upheaval. 'Don't worry,' he replied, 'even if there were to be a revolution in Russia, it won't happen for at least fifty years.'

Protopopov was a textile magnate and Octobrist Duma deputy who became the Russian Empire's last minister of the interior (1916–1917), appointed with the patronage of Empress Alexandra and Grigori Rasputin despite having no bureaucratic or police experience. His tenure was catastrophic: suffering from advanced syphilis that produced hallucinations and psychotic episodes, he dismissed the revolutionary threat, failed to resolve Petrograd's food crisis, and clung to office even as the cabinet and prime minister demanded his resignation. After voluntarily surrendering at the Tauride Palace during the February Revolution, he was imprisoned by the Provisional Government and executed by the Cheka in October 1918, a man whose personal deterioration and political miscalculation accelerated the fall of a three-hundred-year dynasty.
