Leadership of Somalia’s revolutionary council

Following the 1991 collapse, Kulmiye and other Hawiye officers were neither arrested nor expelled from Mogadishu.

A Somali police officer and politician who joined Barre’s regime after the 1969 coup. He became interior minister in 1970 and one of the revolutionary council’s vice-presidents in 1971. His career illustrates the military-police leadership’s control over state administration.

Somali military rule and socialism

He condemned tribalism as a "disease" blocking Somalia's development, decreeing that even marriages be held at state orientation centers.

A Somali military ruler who led the Supreme Revolutionary Council after the 1969 coup. Under scientific socialism he pursued state control, literacy and administrative restructuring. Personal authority and clan relationships continued to shape rule despite the declared campaign against clan divisions.
