The son of hereditary Tula gunsmiths with three years of parish schooling, Degtyaryov rose from tsarist army private to founder of Soviet firearms design. Learning automatic weapons as Fyodorov's assistant, he headed the USSR's first firearms design bureau at Kovrov from 1918 and completed the DP-27 light machine gun in 1927, the Red Army's standard squad automatic through 1945. Nineteen of his designs entered service including the DShK, PPD, PTRD-41, and RPD, while his bureau became the Degtyaryov Plant (ZiD), still a major Russian arms manufacturer. In 1924 he met the 90-year-old John D. Rockefeller in New York to secure credit for Soviet oil. "Rockefeller thought for a long time, looked at me attentively, and unexpectedly agreed. After tea he took me on a brisk half-hour walk through his forest park — I could hardly keep up."
A mechanical engineer turned revolutionary, Serebrovsky rebuilt the war-ravaged Baku oil fields with American drilling technology, laying the foundation for Soviet petroleum production. From 1928 he headed Glavzoloto, the state gold-mining trust, where he imported Alaskan techniques and personally recruited American engineers like John Littlepage to dramatically expand gold output: the bullion that financed machinery imports for Stalin's industrialization. As deputy People's Commissar of Heavy Industry under Sergo Ordzhonikidze, he oversaw the broader construction of Soviet heavy industry until his arrest in the Great Purge, execution in 1938, and posthumous rehabilitation in 1956.

Commander of the industrial front: he pulled the trigger himself
October 27, 1936 — his fiftieth birthday. A grand celebration of his achievements was held in Pyatigorsk, but he refused to attend. That very day he had learned of his brother Papulia's arrest. His wife Zinaida sat alone before the empty chair.
An Old Bolshevik from 1903 and CC member from 1912, he directed the Sovietization of the Caucasus during the Civil War and rose to full Politburo membership in 1930. As Stalin's longtime Georgian comrade and Commissar of Heavy Industry (1932–37), he commanded the First and Second Five-Year Plans. Magnitogorsk, Kuznetsk, DniproHES, Uralmash: the physical skeleton of Soviet industry rose under his hand. But when the Great Terror devoured his handpicked plant directors and his own brother Papulia in 1936, he clashed openly with Stalin and shot himself in February 1937. The state announced heart failure.

Nikolai Glebov-Avilov was a Bolshevik revolutionary from 1904 who ran underground printshops during the 1905 Revolution. After October 1917 he became the first People's Commissar of Posts and Telegraphs in the inaugural Sovnarkom, then served as VTsSPS secretary and chairman of the Petrograd Trade Union Council, emerging as a central figure in Bolshevik trade union politics. At the Fourteenth Party Congress in 1925 he led the Leningrad Opposition alongside Grigory Zinoviev and was removed; he later became first director of Rostselmash (1929–1936), building the Soviet Union's flagship agricultural machinery plant. Arrested in the Great Purge, he was executed in 1937 and rehabilitated in 1956.

In the spring of 1940, Petlyakov watched the test flight of his Pe-2 from the roof of his prison workshop. He was still an inmate.
The right hand of Andrei Tupolev who designed the wings of the TB-1, TB-3 heavy bombers and the ANT-20 Maxim Gorky. Arrested with Tupolev in 1937 on fabricated sabotage charges, he continued designing inside an NKVD sharashka. When Lavrentiy Beria ordered his high-altitude VI-100 fighter converted into a dive bomber, Petlyakov delivered the Pe-2 in 45 days: a machine that became the Red Air Force's most important tactical bomber throughout the Great Patriotic War. Released in 1940, awarded the Stalin Prize (1st class) in 1941, he died the following year when the Pe-2 carrying him to Moscow for production talks crashed near Arzamas.

During the 1921 Kronstadt rebellion, mutineers arrested Langemak and sentenced him to death. He was held from 2 March to 18 April and freed only after the Red Army crushed the uprising — twenty years before he would build the rockets that became the Katyusha.
Of German descent, Langemak began developing smokeless-powder rockets at the Gas Dynamics Laboratory (GDL) and, as chief engineer of the Rocket Research Institute (RNII, 1934–1938), brought the RS-82 and RS-132 solid-fuel rockets to operational readiness. These became the core munition of the BM-13 Katyusha multiple rocket launcher: one of the most iconic Soviet weapons of World War II. He introduced the term 'cosmonautics' into the Russian language and corresponded with Tsiolkovsky about the peaceful space applications of rocketry. The face of Soviet tank design: T-34, T-54/55, and T-64
October 1941: the Kharkov bureau evacuated to the Urals. Morozov, 36, had to make the T-34 simpler for unskilled workers to build while upgrading it to counter Germany's newest tanks.

From Mi-1 to Mi-24: founder of the Mil Design Bureau that rewrote helicopter history
In 1941, with German forces closing in, Mil was ordered to destroy the Special Constructions Department archive. Unable to burn years of research, he smuggled the documents out of the lab and onto an evacuation truck. Those papers later became the foundation of Soviet helicopter design.

Born to a Jewish family in Irkutsk, he began at TsAGI as Kamov's assistant studying autogyros, then founded his own design bureau in 1947 and created the Mi-1. Born to a Ukrainian peasant family and trained as a hydraulic engineer, Neporozhny served 23 years as USSR Minister of Energy and Electrification (1962–1985), overseeing the world's largest hydroelectric stations and the Soviet nuclear power program. He drove the simultaneous construction of the giant Siberian dams (Bratsk, Krasnoyarsk, Sayano-Shushenskaya), the Volga cascade, and Central Asian high-head dams, while building nuclear plants across the USSR and creating the Unified Energy System (UES), one of the most reliable integrated power grids in the world. The man who opened the Soviet mass-automobile era: father of the Lada

The last minister who tried to preserve the Soviet machine-tool industry through perestroika
Asked in 2012 about the state of the industry, Panichev answered: 'Many development programs have already been adopted. Over thirty government documents on machine-tool building alone. Nothing has budged.'
Nikolai Panichev was the last Minister of Machine Tool and Instrument Building Industry of the USSR (1986–1991), a production administrator who rose from lathe operator to director at the Leningrad Ilyich plant over twenty-five years before joining the ministry. As minister he sought to keep Soviet machine-tool manufacturing competitive by introducing CNC machines, flexible manufacturing modules, and robotic complexes, but the sector was caught between the old command system and the half-built market reforms. After the Soviet collapse he founded the Russian machine-tool association Stankoinstrument and chaired the public council of former USSR and RSFSR ministers. His 2004 memoir Razlom (Fracture) offers a first-hand account of late-Soviet industrial achievement and the failure of reform.

When Ustinov ordered mortar production at his plant, his minister Afanasyev warned: 'Make one and I hand you to the prosecutor.' Velichko organized a 'heroic storm,' delivered them, and recalled it as 'nervous, not to say absurd, conditions.'
A technocrat who rose from lathe operator to director of Leningrad's Bolshevik plant, Velichko served as minister for energy, heavy, and transport machine-building (1975–1991) and First Deputy Chairman of the USSR Council of Ministers (1991). His ministries built the Atommash nuclear complex, reactor systems for over a dozen nuclear plants, ICBM ground equipment, and the Buran shuttle launch complex. When other industrial ministries faltered in the late 1980s, his proved resilient enough that the government twice consolidated troubled ministries under his leadership. After the Soviet collapse he remained an industrial elder, chairing Tyazhenergomash and advising on Russian industrial policy.
