French regulation-school economist and Green Member of the European Parliament
Born near Paris to a French mother and a Polish Jewish father, Lipietz trained as an engineer at the École polytechnique and the École nationale des ponts et chaussées; after taking part in May 1968 he turned to economics. As a researcher at CEPREMAP from 1973 to 1999 and research director at the CNRS from 1988 to 2002 he contributed to regulation theory, and in the 1980s he popularised the term "post-Fordism". A former Maoist, he joined the French Greens in 1988, served as their national spokesperson, and sat in the European Parliament from 1999 to 2009.
