Party ideologist who headed the Central Committee Ideological Department and became the last Soviet ambassador to North Korea
Born in 1933 in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, he studied Ukrainian philology at Dnipropetrovsk State University, graduating in 1957. He rose through the Ukrainian Komsomol to be its first secretary in 1968–1972, then served as a secretary of the Kyiv regional committee and head of the Culture Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine, and was a secretary of that Central Committee in 1979–1986. After serving as ambassador to Cuba in 1986–1988, he headed the Ideological Department of the CPSU Central Committee in 1988–1990. He was Soviet and then Russian ambassador to North Korea from October 1990 to January 1992, and later worked as a sociologist at the Institute of Socio-Political Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
