Party official who led the Communist Party of Byelorussia and the Central Committee agitprop department before being shot in the purges

Born in 1894 in Tver, he joined the Bolsheviks in 1915 while studying physics and mathematics at Moscow University, campaigned among students, and was arrested and sentenced to settlement in Eastern Siberia. Amnestied in March 1917, he led the Tver party committee and until the mid-1920s was secretary of party committees in Saratov, Omsk, Donetsk and elsewhere. In 1924–1927 he was responsible secretary and then First Secretary of the Communist Party of Byelorussia. From May 1927 he headed the Central Committee's Agitation and Propaganda Department and in 1928–1929 its Department of Agitation, Propaganda and the Press; he then served as First Secretary of the Transcaucasian Regional Committee and deputy People's Commissar of Agriculture, and from 1934 led the Saratov party committee. Arrested in July 1937, he was shot in October and rehabilitated in 1956.
