Kazakh writer who, as chairman of the Soviet of the Republics, presided over the declaration ending the USSR
Born in 1930 in the village of Karlygash in the Taldykorgan region, he studied journalism at the Kazakh State University in Alma-Ata and joined the CPSU in 1953. He was Central Asian correspondent of Literaturnaya Gazeta, editor-in-chief of the Kazakhfilm studio and of the weekly Kazakh Adebieti, First Secretary of the Writers' Union of Kazakhstan in 1970–1979 and a secretary of the Board of the USSR Writers' Union until 1986. On 29 October 1991 he became chairman of the Soviet of the Republics of the USSR Supreme Soviet, which under his chairmanship adopted the declaration on the termination of the USSR on 26 December 1991. The same year he was elected chairman of the Socialist Party of Kazakhstan, into which most of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan had been transformed. He died in Alma-Ata in 1993.
