Kabardian party leader who established Soviet power in Kabardino-Balkaria and ran it for nearly two decades
Born into a Kabardian peasant family at Atazhukino in the Terek province, he worked as a farmhand, founded the clandestine peasant organisation Karakhalk in 1915–1916, joined the Bolsheviks in 1918, led the congress that proclaimed Soviet power in the Nalchik district and commanded partisans and a division in the Civil War. Chairman of the Kabardino-Balkarian revolutionary committee and regional executive committee from 1920 and first secretary of the regional party committee from 1930, he ruled the region for nearly two decades. In 1937 he sat on the regional troika set up under NKVD Order No. 00447 and took part in the Great Terror. Arrested in November 1938 on charges of building a counter-revolutionary organisation, he was shot on 27 February 1940 and rehabilitated in 1954.
