Banker prime minister who led the Party of Resistance and restored order early in the July Monarchy

Born in Grenoble in 1777 into a rich merchant and banking family, he founded a bank in Paris with his brother Scipion in 1801 and inherited shares in the Anzin coal company. Elected deputy for Paris in 1817, he sat with the moderate opposition of the Left Centre and defended freedom of the press. He was president of the Chamber of Deputies at the outset of the July Revolution of 1830. He led the liberal-conservative Party of Resistance in support of Louis-Philippe's constitutional monarchy and on 13 March 1831 became President of the Council and Minister of the Interior. His government suppressed the revolt of the Lyon silk workers and occupied Ancona in February 1832. Visiting hospitals during the cholera epidemic of 1832, he fell ill and died on 16 May.
