Chester W. Nimitz was a U.S. Navy admiral who rose from submarine and logistics specialist to command the Allied maritime war in the Pacific. Made commander of the Pacific Fleet after Pearl Harbor in 1941, he combined intercepted Japanese communications with operational judgment, concentrated available forces at Midway, and approved the command structure for the Guadalcanal counteroffensive. His leadership converted American superiority in intelligence, matériel, and mobility into sustained operations, while leaving intact the immense human cost of island warfare and blockade. As Chief of Naval Operations after the war, he oversaw demobilization while backing the transition to nuclear-powered submarines.
