Socialist Party first secretary for eleven years who defeated Sarkozy in 2012
Born in Rouen in 1954, he graduated from the ENA and became a magistrate at the Court of Audit; he joined the Socialist Party in 1979 and served as an adviser to President Mitterrand. First elected deputy for the Corrèze in 1988, he was first secretary of the Socialist Party from 1997 to 2008 and mayor of Tulle from 2001 to 2008. Defeating Sarkozy in 2012, he legalised same-sex marriage, but his turn to social liberalism with the 2014 "responsibility pact" and the labour law reform provoked strong protest. He sent troops to Mali and elsewhere and led the country through the 2015 Paris attacks. He did not seek re-election.
