Chairman of the National Coal Board during the 1984–85 miners' strike
A Scottish metallurgist and industrialist born in Kinlochleven. He stayed in the United States after the war, became a naturalised American while keeping his British citizenship, and in 1966 became chief executive of American Metal Climax. The Thatcher government made him chairman of the nationalised British Steel Corporation in 1980, where he cut the workforce from 166,000 to 71,000 by 1983. As head of the National Coal Board from 1983 he pressed pit closures and faced Arthur Scargill in the miners' strike of 1984–85. Scargill called him "the American butcher of British industry". He retired in 1986.
