Иван Афанасьевич Соколянский

Defectologist who began the education of deafblind children in Kharkiv and founded the method on which the Zagorsk experiment was built

Born in 1889 to a Ukrainian Cossack family in the Kuban, he took part in the 1905 revolution and was exiled, studied pedagogy in St Petersburg and became a teacher of deaf-mute children. From 1923 he taught defectology in Kharkiv, becoming professor in 1926; he founded a school-clinic for deafblind children there and for a time led the All-Ukrainian 'Marxist Educator' society. He was arrested in 1933 and again from 1937 to 1939. In 1950 he set up the laboratory for deafblind children at the Institute of Defectology, working with his pupil Olga Skorokhodova, and Alexander Meshcheryakov carried that work on into the Zagorsk experiment. Rehabilitated and restored to the party in 1957, he died in 1960 and in 1981 was posthumously awarded the USSR State Prize with Meshcheryakov.
