The physicist who personally armed the first Soviet atomic bomb and built the second nuclear weapons center as its first scientific director

On 29 August 1949, Shchelkin signed for RDS-1 at the assembly workshop, inserted the initiating charge into the plutonium sphere, sealed the tower door last, and pressed the detonation button.

Kirill Shchelkin was a combustion and detonation physicist who formulated the theory of spin detonation and became a decisive figure in the Soviet atomic bomb project. On 29 August 1949 at the Semipalatinsk test site, he personally inserted the initiating charge into the plutonium sphere of RDS-1, sealed the tower door, and pressed the detonation button. In 1955 he was appointed the first scientific director and chief designer of the second Soviet nuclear weapons center, Chelyabinsk-70 (now VNIITF) in the Urals, where his team developed the first thermonuclear charge accepted into service by the Soviet Army. Awarded Hero of Socialist Labor three times alongside Kurchatov and Khariton, he was forced to retire in 1960 after a series of heart attacks.

Spin Detonation Theory and Combustion Physics

Before joining the nuclear weapons programme, Shchelkin was already a pioneering researcher in the fundamentals of combustion and detonation physics. His most original scientific contribution was the formulation of spin detonation theory. In a 1934 paper in the Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics, he described the phenomenon in which the flame front in combustible gaseous mixtures advances in a helical pattern along a cylindrical tube and calculated the frequency of its rotation: a regime that classical detonation theory could not account for. Shchelkin proposed a feedback mechanism via turbulence for flame acceleration, explaining the transition from deflagration to detonation in tubes.

He systematically studied the effect of artificially introduced wall roughness on flame propagation speed, giving rise to the concept of the Shchelkin turbulent flame zone: a formula describing how turbulence amplifies local flame velocity, with direct implications for the design of internal combustion engines and jet propulsion. Shchelkin demonstrated that spin detonation is a limiting case of pulsating detonation, arising from the instability of a plane detonation front, and derived an approximate criterion for its onset.

His doctoral dissertation, Fast Burning and Spin Detonation of Gases (defended in 1946, published as a monograph in 1949), became a classic in the field. The examining committee included future academicians: Boris Stechkin, founder of air-breathing jet engine theory; theoretical physicist Lev Landau; and aerodynamicist Sergei Khristianovich. Shchelkin's combustion research provided the essential intellectual foundation for precisely controlling implosion wave fronts in the explosive lenses of the Soviet atomic bomb project, and it was the root of the exceptional experimental intuition he later displayed at KB-11 and NII-1011.
