Born in Alameda, California, and educated in Japan, he joined the Tongmenghui at its founding in 1905 and became one of Sun Yat-sen's closest followers. Civil governor of Guangdong in 1923–1924 and a strong supporter of the Soviet alliance, he headed the Kuomintang's labour ministry and from May 1924 was party representative at the Whampoa Military Academy, in charge of the cadets' political training. After Sun's death he was one of the party's three most powerful figures with Wang Jingwei and Hu Hanmin and became finance minister of the Nationalist Government in July 1925, but on 20 August he was shot dead outside a Central Executive Committee meeting in Guangzhou by right-wing opponents of the alliance.
