Marxist economist of the Uno school and analyst of Japan's bubble and the depression of the 1990s
Born in Tokyo, Itoh graduated from the economics faculty of the University of Tokyo, became associate professor there in 1966 and professor in 1980, and taught until 1997 before moving to Kokugakuin University. A member of the school founded by Kōzō Uno, he was regarded internationally as one of the most important scholars of Marx's theory of value, and was one of the few Japanese Marxian economists to publish widely in English-language journals; his books include Value and Crisis and The Japanese Economy Reconsidered. He analysed Japan's bubble and the depression of the 1990s as the swelling and collapse of fictitious capital and an outcome of neoliberal policy.
