German finance minister who championed austerity in the euro crisis and raised a temporary Greek exit
A lawyer born in Freiburg, Schäuble joined the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in 1965 and sat in the Bundestag from 1972 until his death. As interior minister he led the negotiations for reunification in 1990, and an assassination attempt that year left him using a wheelchair. He was CDU leader in 1998–2000. As finance minister from 2009 to 2017 he took a hard line toward southern Europe in the euro crisis, and in 2012 rejected IMF chief Christine Lagarde's call to give Greece more time. In 2014 he produced the first budget without new debt since 1969. He was criticised by Yanis Varoufakis for his actions in the "Grexit" crisis of 2015.
