Prime Minister of Japan at the time of the Plaza Accord and the privatisation of the national railways
Born in Takasaki, Gunma, Nakasone graduated from Tokyo Imperial University and served in the navy during the Pacific War. He entered the Diet in 1947, rose through the Liberal Democratic Party as head of the Defense Agency and minister of international trade and industry, and was prime minister from 1982 to 1987. Close to Reagan, he rejected Keynesianism, supported neoliberalism and privatised the national railways and telephone corporation. He accepted the Plaza Accord in 1985 and, through the Maekawa commission, pledged that Japan would grow through domestic demand rather than exports.
