Aster Revolution

과꽃 혁명

The revolution in Budapest at the end of October 1918 that made Mihály Károlyi prime minister and led to the Hungarian People’s Republic. It takes its name from the asters soldiers wore in their caps in place of the rose.

In depth

On 23 October Károlyi’s Independence Party, the Radicals and the Social Democrats formed the Hungarian National Council, and when the king appointed János Hadik prime minister on 30 October the Soldiers’ Council seized key points in Budapest. Károlyi became prime minister on 31 October, the day the former premier István Tisza was killed, and the People’s Republic was proclaimed on 16 November.

The Károlyi government disbanded the army and relied on Entente goodwill, but lost most of the country to occupation by neighbouring armies; it fell over the Vix note in March 1919 and gave way to the Hungarian Soviet Republic.
