N-1 로켓
The N-1 was the Soviet Union's super heavy-lift launch vehicle, a five-stage kerosene-liquid oxygen rocket that packed 30 NK-15 engines into its first stage. Originally conceived for crewed Mars and Venus flybys, it was redirected into the Moon race in 1964 as the launcher for the N1-L3 lunar landing complex, the counterpart to the American Saturn V. All four test launches (1969–1972) failed during first-stage operation; the program was suspended in 1974 and the USSR withdrew from the Moon race without a single successful flight.

From Conception to the Moon Race
Initial studies for what became the N-1 began at OKB-1 in 1959. Sergei Korolev envisioned a heavy-lift rocket for 75-ton orbital stations and crewed Mars and Venus flybys, seeking military backing through the promise of launching heavy military space stations. Kennedy's 1961 Moon speech and the Soviet leadership's 1964 decision to pursue a crewed lunar landing redirected the N-1 into the centerpiece of the Moon race.
Design and Technical Challenges
The N-1's Block A first stage clustered 30 NK-15 engines in concentric rings, producing 4,540 tonnes of thrust, a record that stood for over half a century until SpaceX's Super Heavy. The choice of propellant split the program: Korolev insisted on kerosene-liquid oxygen, Valentin Glushko pushed for toxic hypergolics, and the falling-out led Korolev to turn to aircraft engine designer Nikolai Kuznetsov, who developed the NK-15.
The KORD system, designed to monitor 30 engines in real time and shut down opposing pairs to maintain symmetric thrust, proved brittle against false signals, wiring fires, and vibration-induced plumbing failures. The decisive problem was that no ground facility existed to static-fire the complete first stage. Individual engines tested reliably, but the vibrational modes, plumbing interactions, and fluid-dynamic instabilities of 30 engines firing together were discovered only in flight.
Four Launches and Two Decades of Silence
The first launch (3L) on 21 February 1969 failed at 68 seconds when KORD misinterpreted electrical interference and shut down the entire first stage. The second launch (5L) on 3 July 1969, seventeen days before Apollo 11 landed on the Moon, climbed about 200 meters before a turbopump failure pitched the rocket back onto its launch pad, triggering an explosion estimated at seven kilotons, one of the largest non-nuclear blasts ever produced by human engineering. It destroyed Site 110 at Baikonur.
The third launch (6L) on 27 June 1971 disintegrated from roll-control failure; the fourth (7L) on 23 November 1972 flew 107 seconds before an oxidizer pump explosion just before stage separation. Improved NK-33 engines and a digital S-530 guidance computer were ready for the N1F variant, but in May 1974 Glushko replaced Vasily Mishin as chief designer and immediately canceled both the N-1 and the crewed lunar program. The USSR officially denied the N-1's existence until glasnost in 1989.
Legacy
About 150 NK-33 engines survived destruction after the program's cancellation. In the mid-1990s, Russia sold 36 engines and a production license to the American company Aerojet. Modified versions powered Orbital Sciences' Antares rocket and Russia's Soyuz 2.1v. The N-1's failure experience drove home the necessity of full-scale ground testing, and the Soviet Union later regained heavy-lift capability with the Energia launch vehicle in the late 1980s.
