Different financial and enterprise systems complicated integration with North Yemen after unification in 1990. The southern state commercial bank and public-enterprise liabilities became issues in financial reform. South Yemen should not be conflated with the later unified oil economy.
Official ideology alone cannot establish uniform planning across society. Ports, remittances, external assistance, rural livelihoods and damage from the 1986 fighting all matter. Statistics for South Yemen must be kept distinct from northern and unified Yemeni series.
