A Gorky auto-plant blacksmith who became a symbol of industrial productivity

When Ford’s representatives invited him to Detroit for gold, Busygin reportedly replied, “For us, the homeland is dearer than gold.”

Alexander Busygin was a leading Soviet production worker, a blacksmith at the Gorky Automobile Plant who introduced practical methods for raising output and organized a skilled brigade. In 1935 his team forged 966 and then 1,001 crankshafts in a shift against a norm of 675, making him a symbol of the Stakhanovite movement’s spread into machine building. He remained connected to the plant through wartime and postwar management and worker training, showing how the celebrated labour hero depended on both individual skill and organized workplace mobilization.
