The Soviet fighter commander who led the battle over MiG Alley

“We could not overcome the Americans in the air.”

Georgy Lobov was a Soviet air general who rose from fighter pilot to division commander during the Second World War. In the Korean War, he commanded the 64th Fighter Aviation Corps, organizing the Soviet Union’s covert air intervention while flying MiG-15 missions himself to pass combat experience to younger pilots. His later testimony exposes a tension between official claims of success in MiG Alley and his assessment that Soviet forces had not ultimately overcome the Americans in the air. He later worked in military education and wrote about his Korean War experience.
