The theoretical pioneer who opened the path to space with packet rockets

At a 1948 scientific council, Tikhonravov argued that clustered 'packet' rockets could place a satellite in orbit — the hall erupted in mockery and jeers. Nine years later, Sputnik 1 circled the Earth.

The theoretical father of Soviet spaceflight. In 1933 he designed GIRD-09, the first Soviet liquid-fuel rocket, and in 1948 he proved mathematically that clustered 'packet' rockets could reach orbit, an idea initially met with ridicule. Sustained by Korolev's support, his work laid the design foundation for Sputnik, Vostok, and Luna. In 1956 he became head of OKB-1's Department No. 9, overseeing satellite and crewed spacecraft design. A classically educated man fluent in Latin, he coined the term 'cosmonaut.'

Project VR-190: The First Soviet Conception of Human Spaceflight

In late 1944, shortly after Soviet intelligence recovered debris of the German V-2 (A-4) rocket in Poland, Tikhonravov immediately began sketching his own high-altitude piloted rocket. His concept called for a single-stage vehicle powered by a 30-ton-thrust engine, launched vertically with a pilot aboard to an altitude of 190 kilometers, after which the capsule would separate and descend by parachute. Named VR-190 (from Russian «Высотная ракета», 'High-Altitude Rocket'), the project was formally proposed to Aviation Industry Minister M.V. Khrunichev in March 1946, and reportedly drew a positive reaction from Stalin himself.

Technologically an extension of V-2 lineage, VR-190 was nonetheless radically different in its aim. While the military and industrial establishment focused single-mindedly on extending ballistic missile range, Tikhonravov was the first Soviet engineer to conceive of the rocket as a vehicle for sending a human being to the edge of space. The pilot would experience roughly four minutes of weightlessness at apogee, and the capsule was to be designed to withstand atmospheric reentry.

But the immense technical challenges (reliable propulsion, reentry heat shielding, emergency escape systems) proved insurmountable at the time. With the formation of a dedicated Soviet rocket industry in May 1946, VR-190 effectively stalled, and Tikhonravov and a small team transferred to NII-4, where they pivoted to multistage rocket and satellite research. Though VR-190 itself never flew, the high-altitude flight dynamics, capsule design principles, and piloted-return concepts developed during this project became the intellectual seedbed for the Vostok program fifteen years later.
