Statut des Juifs · 1940–1941

Statut des Juifs

유대인 법령

The Statut des Juifs was the antisemitic law enacted by Vichy France on 3 October 1940, defining Jews legally through grandparental ancestry rather than religion. It excluded Jews from public service and political responsibilities and restricted their access to the judiciary, education, press, broadcasting, performance, and liberal professions.

In depth

The October 1940 statute introduced an ancestry-based criterion resembling Nazi racial legislation, but it was enacted as an initiative of the French State itself. Article 4 allowed quotas in liberal professions, while limited exemptions existed for some decorated veterans and people judged to have rendered exceptional service to the state. A second statute of 2 June 1941 tightened the criteria and exclusions.
