Mozambican rehabilitation and peace

"Peace and stability in the SADC region are essential preconditions for our economic development and integration"

A FRELIMO leader and post-independence foreign minister, he succeeded Machel as president in 1986. He pursued the 1987 Economic Rehabilitation Program and later multiparty transition. The 1992 peace agreement marked a major turning point in ending war and rebuilding the economy.
