The 'Papa Ioffe' who reared all of Soviet physics

When Röntgen offered him a Munich professorship in 1905, the 25-year-old Ioffe replied: 'I do not want to be a politician — I find satisfaction only in science. But my country is in crisis, and it is my duty to return.'

A pupil of Röntgen, he founded the Physico-Technical Institute in 1918 and built it into the cradle of Soviet physics, training Kurchatov, Kapitsa, and the generation behind the Soviet nuclear program. Dismissed in 1950 during the anti-cosmopolitan campaign, he returned after Stalin's death to found the Semiconductor Institute.

The Scientific School of 'Papa Ioffe'

Ioffe's greatest legacy was the physics school he created. It began with a seminar he organized at the Petrograd Polytechnic Institute in 1916, drawing in the brightest young minds from the Polytechnic and Petersburg University. These early participants soon became the driving force behind the Physico-Technical Institute, founded in 1918. Ioffe gave his students complete freedom in choosing their research directions, actively encouraged contact with the international scientific community, and kept laboratory doors open so that even the most junior researcher could test an idea. This 'Ioffe style' became the culture of Soviet physics as a whole.

Beginning in 1929, on Ioffe's initiative, Physico-Technical Institutes were established in major industrial cities: Kharkiv, Dnepropetrovsk, Sverdlovsk, and Tomsk. Each institute pursued applied research tied to local industry while maintaining rigorous standards in fundamental science. The figures who emerged from this network came to dominate every branch of Soviet science: Kurchatov (nuclear energy), Kapitsa (low-temperature physics), Semyonov (chemical physics, Nobel Prize), Aleksandrov (nuclear energy, later president of the Academy), Artsimovich (nuclear fusion), Frenkel (solid-state physics), Kikoin (nuclear energy), and many more. Ioffe himself never won a Nobel Prize, but his student Semyonov became the first Soviet Nobel laureate in chemistry in 1956, and Kapitsa won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1978. His students called him 'Papa Ioffe,' a nickname that endures in the history of Soviet science as a term of warm reverence.
