Greek prime minister elected against austerity who accepted the third bailout after the referendum
Born in Athens, Tsipras studied civil engineering at the National Technical University of Athens, was spokesperson of the student movement in the 1990s, and became leader of Syriza (the Coalition of the Radical Left) in 2008. In the January 2015 election he won 149 of 300 seats, formed a coalition with the Independent Greeks and became the youngest prime minister in Greek history. He put the creditors' proposal to a referendum and won a 61 percent "No", but a week later agreed to a third bailout on harsher terms. Re-elected in September, he carried out austerity as prime minister until 2019.
