Co-founder of the Socialist Revolutionary Party and deputy member of the Directory, arrested in the Omsk coup
Born into a noble family at Yeniseysk, he founded the Union of Socialist Revolutionaries at Saratov in 1896 and in 1901 started Revolutionary Russia, the SR party's first illegal journal. Betrayed that year by Azef, whom he had brought into the party, he was deported to Siberia, escaped in 1905 and joined the Central Committee. Supporting the war in 1914 put him on the party's far right; in 1917 he backed Kerensky and was elected to the Constituent Assembly. In 1918 he took part in the Ufa State Conference and became Avksentiev's deputy in the Directory, but was arrested in the Omsk coup and deported, and he died in exile in Prague in 1939.
