A combat officer wounded three times in World War II, rising to battalion commander, he became a Dnipropetrovsk party cadre before Andropov brought him into the KGB in 1967. As KGB chairman from 1982 to 1988, he simultaneously directed an intelligence war against the US, exploiting Aldrich Ames's intel to dismantle CIA networks, and the high-profile anti-corruption investigation into the Uzbek leadership. He entered the Politburo as a full member in 1985 but sided with Yegor Ligachyov against the pace of perestroika and was dismissed in 1988.
