Sailor who led the Cheka combat detachment at the centre of the July 1918 revolt
A Baltic Fleet sailor of peasant origin, Popov joined the Left SRs in 1917 and took part in the October rising. He came to command the Cheka combat detachment, and in July 1918 Blumkin's group and the party's Central Committee gathered at his headquarters after the killing of Mirbach. When the revolt collapsed under shellfire he escaped, and at the November trial he was outlawed as an enemy of the working people. He went to Ukraine and served in the command of Makhno's army, and was captured and shot on a Cheka verdict in 1921.
