Royalist commander who led guerrilla war in the Lower Vendée
A former French naval officer, Charette became a commander of the Catholic and Royal Army in the War in the Vendée. He led guerrilla warfare in the Lower Vendée, signed the Treaty of La Jaunaye in 1795, and later resumed the revolt. Captured in 1796, he was executed by firing squad in Nantes.
Revolutionary choices and political context
Charette’s war shows that the Vendéan revolt did not operate through one front or one command. In the Lower Vendée he led guerrilla warfare using mobility and local knowledge, while military conflict with republican forces was entangled with residents, clergy, and relations of landholding.
The Treaty of La Jaunaye in 1795 shows that the conflict between royalists and republicans did not proceed only through total war. Negotiations over religious freedom and conscription created a temporary truce, but changing conditions of trust and power brought renewed fighting. His execution was not simply the end of rebellion but one moment in the repression and reprisals left by a long civil war.
