Philosopher whose Nietzsche and Philosophy reread Nietzsche as a philosopher of difference and opened left-wing Nietzscheanism

He studied philosophy at the Sorbonne and taught at lycées before moving to the university. In Nietzsche and Philosophy (1962) he read Nietzsche not as a reactionary mystic but as a metaphysician of the play of forces and of difference, set against Hegel's dialectic, and the book did much to establish "left-wing Nietzscheanism" in 1960s France. Around this time he befriended Foucault, and he defended Difference and Repetition as his thesis amid the May 1968 demonstrations. He taught at the University of Paris VIII from 1969 to 1987, and in Anti-Oedipus (1972) and A Thousand Plateaus (1980), written with Félix Guattari, analysed the state and capitalism through "desiring-production", which combines Freud's drives and Marx's labour.
