Greta Krippner

American sociologist who measured the financialization of the US economy and traced its political origins

Krippner studied anthropology and history at the University of Iowa and took her PhD in sociology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2003, advised by Jane Collins and Erik Olin Wright; her dissertation, "The Fictitious Economy: Financialization, the State, and Contemporary Capitalism", won the American Sociological Association dissertation award. Her 2005 article "The Financialization of the American Economy" measured financialization as a pattern of accumulation in which profits accrue increasingly through financial channels. Her book Capitalizing on Crisis: The Political Origins of the Rise of Finance (2011) argued that the turn to finance in the United States since the 1970s was an inadvertent response to unresolved distributional dilemmas as post-war growth stalled. After teaching at UCLA she joined the University of Michigan in 2007.
