Prime Minister of Japan who nationalised the Long-Term Credit Bank in the 1998 financial crisis

Born in Nakanojō, Gunma, the son of a Diet member, Obuchi graduated from Waseda University and entered the House of Representatives in 1963 as one of its youngest members. As chief cabinet secretary under Takeshita he announced the new era name "Heisei" in 1989, and after serving as Hashimoto's foreign minister he became LDP president and prime minister in 1998. In the "financial Diet" he accepted the opposition's bill and nationalised the Long-Term Credit Bank under the Financial Revitalisation Act, and he tried to prop up the economy with "Obuchinomics": higher public spending, income-tax cuts and shopping coupons. He collapsed with a stroke in April 2000 and died in May.
