Maximilien Neumayer

Maximilien-Georges-Joseph Neumayer

Republican general removed from Paris for keeping his troops from cheering Bonaparte

Born in 1789 at Neuhausen near Worms, he was a French general of German origin. Trained at Fontainebleau and Saint-Cyr, he was commissioned in 1809 and was wounded several times while distinguishing himself in the Peninsular War. Put on half pay in 1814, he returned in 1820, served in the Spanish expedition, and after the July Revolution fought in Belgium and with the Foreign Legion in Algeria. Promoted divisional general in June 1848, he commanded the 1st military division in Paris. A staunch republican, he backed the Assembly majority in 1850 and punished soldiers who shouted "Long live the Emperor!" at parades; Marx records that this got him removed from Paris. He also opposed the coup. He died at Nantes in 1866.
