Director of The Cranes Are Flying, the only Soviet film to win the Palme d'Or
Born Kalatozishvili in Tbilisi, he rose through the Georgian film trust as driver and projectionist to director. A Nail in the Boot (1931) was banned as "politically harmful". He joined the party in 1939 and served as the Cinema Committee's representative in the United States and as deputy minister of cinematography. The Cranes Are Flying (1957), made with the cinematographer Sergei Urusevsky, took the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1958. I Am Cuba (1964) was restored in the 1990s with the help of Scorsese and Coppola.
