Worker Old Bolshevik who led the party in the Far East, served as a Central Committee secretary and became People’s Commissar of Agriculture
Born in 1881 in Meshchovsk, Kaluga Governorate, he worked as a turner at the Bryansk locomotive works, joined the RSDLP in 1898 and spent 1907–1915 in prison and exile. After the October Revolution he chaired the Petrograd provincial party committee and was deputy chairman of the provincial executive committee as a follower of Zinoviev; in 1920 he briefly adhered to the Workers’ Opposition before leaving it. He led the party in the Far East in 1922–1927, was a secretary of the Central Committee in 1927–1928 and RSFSR People’s Commissar of Agriculture from February 1928 to December 1929. Arrested in June 1937, he was shot on 27 November and rehabilitated in 1956.
