Russian and Soviet geneticist and botanist. He discovered the law of homologous series in hereditary variation, developed the theory of centers of origin of cultivated plants, and built the world's largest seed collection: over 250,000 samples gathered across some 180 expeditions worldwide. As the first president of the All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences (VASKhNIL) and longtime director of the Institute of Plant Industry (VIR), he led Soviet agricultural science, until his open opposition to Lysenko's pseudoscience provoked his arrest on fabricated charges in 1940. He died of dystrophy in Saratov prison in 1943 and was posthumously rehabilitated in 1955.

Centers of Origin of Cultivated Plants

Vavilov's most original and enduring scientific contribution was his theory of the centers of origin of cultivated plants. Building on Darwin's geographic insights in The Origin of Species and Alphonse de Candolle's earlier work, Vavilov first broached the idea in his 1917 paper "On the Origin of Cultivated Rye" and systematized it in his 1926 book Centers of Origin of Cultivated Plants. Where de Candolle had placed origins in the broad river valleys of early civilizations, Vavilov, drawing on more than 250,000 samples gathered across some 180 botanical-agronomic expeditions, reached a groundbreaking conclusion: the primary centers lay in mountainous regions, where altitude, sharp diurnal temperature swings, and intense ultraviolet radiation drive the genetic mutations that generate diversity. He established the principle that the region of greatest genetic diversity for a crop is its center of origin, and ultimately identified seven centers: the South Asian Tropical (ca. 33% of all cultivated species: rice, citrus, cucumber, sugarcane), East Asian (19%: soybean, millet, buckwheat, brassicas), Southwest Asian (14%: wheat, barley, rye, pea, lentil), Mediterranean (11%: durum wheat, olive, sugar beet), Ethiopian (4%: teff, uniquely cross-pollinating barleys), Central American (10%: maize, tomato, common bean, sunflower), and Andean (9%: potato, quinoa, dahlia). The theory gave plant breeders a targeted map for searching out useful traits and became the scientific foundation of seed banks worldwide; its enduring validity is reflected in the fact that most CGIAR international research centers today sit precisely where Vavilov's map placed them.
