Legitimist parliamentary leader and orator who voted to depose the president at the 10th arrondissement town hall in the coup of 1851

Born in Paris in 1790, the son of an eminent advocate, he was a lifelong Legitimist: he followed Louis XVIII to Ghent in the Hundred Days and under the Restoration helped defend Marshal Ney. Elected deputy in 1830, he alone of the Legitimists kept his seat after the July Revolution and fought the July Monarchy from it. In 1843 he went to London to acknowledge the Count of Chambord as "Henri V". Elected for the Bouches-du-Rhône in 1848 and 1849, he campaigned with the Right for monarchy, and in the coup of 2 December 1851 he joined the representatives at the 10th arrondissement town hall who voted to depose the Prince-President. He was elected to the Académie française in 1852 and returned as an opposition deputy for Marseille in 1863.
