French economist, with Aglietta a leading theorist of regulation theory
Born in Nice, Boyer studied at the École polytechnique and the École nationale des ponts et chaussées. He began as a state economist at the Ministry of Equipment and then in the forecasting directorate of the Ministry of Finance, where his team's econometric model failed to foresee anything of the 1973 oil shock; that failure turned him to research. In 1974 he joined CEPREMAP, where with Michel Aglietta, Alain Lipietz and others he built regulation theory. From 1982 to 2008 he was a CNRS research director and director of studies at the EHESS. He has pursued an institutional and historical macroeconomics of the wage relation, monetary and financial regimes and international comparison, and asked whether a finance-led growth regime could follow Fordism.
