Director of The Blue Kite
Born in Beijing, the son of the actors Tian Fang and Yu Lan, he served in the army, worked in film photography, entered the Beijing Film Academy in 1978, graduated in 1982 and was assigned to the Beijing Film Studio. When The Blue Kite (1993) was banned in China he was barred from filmmaking, working meanwhile as a producer for younger directors. Sources give the ban as eight or ten years, and one says it lasted officially until 1996. He returned with Springtime in a Small Town in 2001 and from 2002 taught at the Beijing Film Academy.
