Agricultural-machinery engineer who was the last USSR Minister of Agriculture and Food in 1991
Born in Grozny in 1938, he graduated from the Tashkent Institute of Irrigation and Agricultural Mechanisation Engineers in 1963. He worked at the All-Union Research Institute for the Repair and Operation of Machine-Tractor Fleets and in 1979–1983 was director general of the Remdetal research-and-production association. He was deputy chairman of the USSR State Agro-Industrial Committee in 1985–1989 and first deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers’ State Commission for Food and Procurement in 1989–1991, and in 1991 became USSR Minister of Agriculture and Food. After the Soviet Union’s collapse he was Russia’s deputy minister of agriculture and food in 1997–1999 and director of the GOSNITI machine-repair institute, and he became a full member of VASKhNIL in 1991 and of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2013.
