Altona Bloody Sunday
알토나의 피의 일요일
The events of 17 July 1932, when a recruitment march by the Nazi SA through Altona, then in the Prussian province of Schleswig-Holstein and now part of Hamburg, led to violent clashes between the police, the SA and supporters of the Communist Party of Germany. Eighteen people were killed.
In depth
Some 7,000 SA men marched through a working-class district loyal to the Communists; later investigations found that 16 of the 18 dead were killed by bullets from police carbines. Papen’s government and Hindenburg used the events three days later as a pretext for the Prussian coup. After the Nazis took power, four defendants classified as Communists were sentenced to death in a trial built on partly falsified evidence and were beheaded on 1 August 1933.
