Beijing Students’ Autonomous Federation (1989)
베이징 대학생 자치연합회 (1989)
An independent inter-university student organization formed in Beijing in April 1989. It sought dialogue and recognition separate from official student bodies. Figures including Wang Dan and Wu’er Kaixi participated, but it was not a single command uniting every hunger-strike and occupation organization.
In depth
Autonomy and representation
Students dissatisfied with official student unions created their own representatives and coordination structures. The authorities feared that recognizing independent organization would undermine established institutions and party authority. Who could represent the students was itself contested.
Divided leadership
Campus groups, dialogue delegations, hunger strikers and square headquarters overlapped in membership without sharing a single decision-making structure. Treating the federation as synonymous with the whole movement obscures withdrawal disputes and leadership competition.
Workers
Students and workers shared opposition to corruption and repression, but differed over autonomy, class identity and strategy. The student federation and the Beijing Workers’ Autonomous Federation were separate bodies.
