Beijing Workers’ Autonomous Federation (1989)
베이징 노동자 자치연합회 (1989)
An independent workers’ organization formed during the 1989 Beijing protests. Distinct from the party-controlled official trade-union federation, it raised autonomous representation, wages, prices and cadre privilege. Han Dongfang was among its organizers. It was suppressed after June Fourth and was separate from the student federation.
In depth
Workers’ demands
Inflation and unequal workplace power were immediate concerns for urban workers. The federation sought not only action against corruption but the right to independent representation and a voice at work. The existence of official unions did not provide independent freedom of association.
Relationship with students
Workers were both supporters and autonomous political actors. Some student leaders prioritized official dialogue and order and kept their distance from independent worker organization. Cooperation therefore coexisted with tension.
Repression
Workers and residents blocking the army suffered many casualties. The federation was declared illegal and its activists arrested. Han Dongfang experienced prolonged detention, illness, overseas treatment and denial of reentry. Its history prevents the movement from being reduced to a story of student leaders alone.
