A monarchy in which constitutional law limits the monarch’s powers. The extent of the monarch’s governing authority varies across constitutions and periods.

The French Constitution of 1791 vested sovereignty in the nation while naming the legislature and king as its representatives. The king held executive authority but could not dissolve the legislature. National sovereignty alone did not establish a republic or universal suffrage.
