Cordeliers Club

Danton, Desmoulins, Marat, Hébert and Chaumette were active in it, representing different currents. After the royal family's failed flight in 1791 the club drafted a petition offering the National Assembly a choice between Louis XVI's immediate deposition and a national referendum. Under the Convention it was, with the Paris Commune, the section assemblies and the press, a channel of mobilisation outside the assembly. It lost its force after the execution of the Hébertists in March 1794 and the Dantonists in April, and the Thermidorians arranged its final closure in Pluviôse Year III. Since Danton and Desmoulins and later Hébert used the club as a base at different times, the Cordeliers should not be equated with a single faction.
