double envelopment

이중 포위

Double envelopment is an operational method that combines a fixing attack against the enemy front with manoeuvres around both flanks so that the two wings link up in the rear. The resulting pocket cuts escape routes and supply lines, isolating the enemy force.

In depth

The method holds the enemy in place in the centre while mobile reserves move around both wings to close the pocket. The Soviet-Mongolian offensive commanded by Georgy Zhukov at Khalkhin Gol in 1939 is described as an example: a fixing attack in the centre was combined with armoured flank movements and a link-up in the rear that encircled the Japanese force. Its execution requires concentration of forces, deception, sustained supply, and coordination of the closing movement.
